What Does it Mean to be a Born Again Christian?

You may have heard that in order to be saved, one must be born again. Yet, you may be wondering what all this really means? It’s a question that many people ask. One familiar story in the Bible (John 3: 1-21) addresses this very inquiry. Jesus has a conversation with a man named Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees and an authority figure of that time. He wanted to get some answers.

The Conversation

John 3:3-7 Jesus says, “I tell you the truth; no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

Nicodemus then asked, “How can man be born when he is old?” Then he goes on to say, “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, “You must be born again.”

So What Does “Born Again” Mean?

Being born again is actually translated to mean “born from above.” Like Nicodemus, people aren’t in need of a physical rebirth but one that is spiritual in nature. It all starts with the heart. When someone has a change of heart and puts their trust in Jesus, they are spiritually reborn, and God imparts to each one the gift on everlasting life.

Though we are all God’s creation, when one becomes spiritually reborn, that person is considered to be one of His own children. Yes, when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you become a child of God!

Supporting Scriptures

  • II Corinthians 5:17
  • Titus 3:5
  • I Peter 1:3
  • 1 John 2:29 3:9 4:7 5:1-4 18
  • John 1:12-13

Why Do You Need to be Reborn?

It’s a reasonable question with a definite answer.

In Romans 3:23 the apostle Paul wrote that all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. It is sin that separates us from God, and without Him we are spiritually dead. Only when we are connected with Christ through our faith are we revived and redeemed. Once that occurs, we live to gratify the spirit man by following the Spirit of God and not our fleshly desires.

Supporting Scriptures

  • Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Ephesians 2:1 – “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”
  • John 14:6 – “I am the way, the Truth and the Life. No one come to the Father but through Me.”

Still, How is One Born Again?

Trying to earn the gift of eternal life through our own works or by only doing good deeds is not the way to obtain salvation. According to Ephesians 2: 8-9, we cannot save ourselves. It’s God’s grace that actually does the saving. Our part is to simply believe and make a decision to live for Christ.

When we believe, we accept that Jesus is indeed the Son of the living God who came to pay the penalty for our sins and put us in a right standing with the Heavenly Father. You believe that through Him all of your sins have been forgiven and that everything was taken care of for you (including deliverance and healing) through His sacrifice on the cross.

II Corinthians 5:17 states that if anyone be in Christ, he is a new creature; the old has passed away and the new has come. Being born again is about becoming a child of God and thus becoming a new creation.

When you become born again, you also have a desire to put all aside and live a life that’s pleasing to Him. Yes, it requires a change in the heart. Yet, it all starts with the tugging of the Holy Spirit at the door of your heart. Will you surrender, let Him come in and change your life.

Prayer for Salvation

If you have a desire to become a born again Christian, the following is a sample prayer just for you. You can talk to God right here; right now. Remember, this prayer will not save you -- it is all about placing your faith and trust in Jesus Christ. This prayer is simply a way of communicating your faith to God and thanking Him.

Dear God,

I recognize that I have transgressed against you and am in need of a Savior. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins, paid the price for me and arose again on the third day. I give you my heart and commit myself to you. Thank you for coming into my life and giving me the gift of everlasting life. Amen.
