It can be easy for healthy people to take their good health for granted. As they enjoy being able to move, breathe, and live freely, they may forget to thank God and to realize that God has given them the gift of wellness. However, people in all states of health should realize that the human body has definite limitations established by God, which is why it is so important that we understand God’s rules for staying healthy. We can safeguard our bodies and minds and otherwise enjoy good personal wellness by knowing what the Bible says about health.
The Bible and Maintaining Your Health
In fact, taking care of our health should start by following God’s word and reading our Bibles faithfully. The Bible is indeed a manual of sorts for maintaining the human body and taking care of ourselves properly. Just as cars and machines have manuals, so do humans in the form of the God’s word in the Bible. As we read Scripture, we come to realize that we should avoid excess, including too much food or addictive substances. When we obey His word and what the Bible says about personal wellness, we can enjoy having good physical, mental, and spiritual health.
The Present-Day Application of Health Laws from Moses’ Time
God has always wanted to help people stay healthy. In fact, when He handed down His laws to Moses, God did more than provide the Israelites with laws by which they should live. He also gave them guidelines for how they could stay healthy while they searched for the Promise Land. Those laws touched on a wide variety of health matters, including health education, avoiding infections, keeping food and water sanitary, and disposing of sewage properly. As ancient as those guidelines may seem to modern day doctors and scientists, they still are useful and valid today. In fact, God tells us in Proverbs 3: 1-2, 8, “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity…This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” God did not dismiss His interest in our health after Moses; His living word still applies to us today. Just as Moses and the Israelites were expected to heed God’s commandments, so are we today. When we read Ecclesiastes 12:13, “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man,” we know that His laws apply today just as much as they did back in the time of Moses.
Stay Close to God for Good Health
With that, we should understand that staying in good health, regardless of our life’s circumstances, calls for us to stay close to God. He tells us “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). The Egyptians did not stay close to God; in fact, they refused to acknowledge His very existence. Consequently, God sent some of the worst plagues to Egypt and allowed the people there to suffer boils, sickness, and even death. However, he saved Moses and the Israelites from fate because they stayed close to God.
If we likewise stay close to God and follow His commandments, then by His word we can expect to be saved from health conditions that would otherwise shorten our lives. That is not to say that we will live entirely free from challenges or trials. Even Job, who loved God and followed His word, was tested. However, God tells us in 3 John 1:2, “I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” We may suffer from time to time simply because of our human nature; however, when we are close to God, we otherwise enjoy the benefits of whole mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.
God’s word in the form of the Holy Bible serves as our manual for personal wellness. Scientists are just now discovering the same rules for good health that have always been accessible to God’s followers. God is our Great Physician, our loving and merciful Father who truly knows what is best for us. If we stay close to Him, follow His commandments, and read our Bible, we will enjoy good health.
