In society today, it is difficult not to feel pressured into looking super fit and thin. The latest diets are continually advertised, with a recent increase in the popularity of diet pills. Of course, with the media claiming that these 'new and improved' diet pills can help you loss weight quickly, why would anyone think twice about jumping on this miracle?

Unfortunately, the major effects of these weight loss pills are not publicly advertised to individuals. Some of these ingredients have been found to be dangerous, and have been banned by the FDA. But, it has taken a good length of time for this to happen, and there are still quite a bit of dangerous diet pill ingredients that are available to the public. The following list states ten dangerous diet pill ingredients in which consumers should look out for:

  1. Ma Huang / Ephedra - Ma Huang is used as a stimulant, as well as for weight loss and hunger suppression. It is an ingredient in which the FDA suggests not to take (it was banned from the US in 2004), as it has been stated to cause heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeat, and sudden death.
  2. Bitter Orange / Synephrine - Bitter Orange contains a similar stimulant to Ephedra, Synephrine. Like Ephedra, it has been taken off the market in the United States. It has been proven to cause risks such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and seizures.
  3. Sibutramine - Sibutramine, which was removed from the US market in 2010, is a stimulant used for weight-loss. Its more common side effects are heart attacks and strokes, but due to it now being completely off the market, it is a known dangerous substance.
  4. Fenproporex - Fenproporex is a stimulant that has been designed to suppress one's appetite. Although, the FDA has yet to approve the drug in the United States, due to the fact of it not proven to be safe. Certain side effects include drowsiness, headaches, and chest pain.
  5. Phenolphthalein - Phenolphthalein is used as a laxative to suppress one's appetite. It has been a dangerous ingredient hidden in diet pills, and is no longer being recommended for weight loss purposes. Side effects from this ingredient include irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, and fatigue.
  6. Yohimbe - Yohimbe is a stimulant used for weight loss and athletic performance. It is not suggested for weight loss, as there is no conclusive research proving effectiveness. Side effects from this drug include symptoms such as, confusion, irregular heartbeat, and dizziness.
  7. Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate Acid (GHB) - GHB was a dietary supplement used as diet pills for weight loss and building muscle until 1990, when the FDA took it off the market in the United States. As well, it has been labeled as being used as the "date rape drug." Using this drug may cause the following serious side effects: headache, dizziness, nausea, and hallucinations.
  8. Germander - Germander is a plant-like substance mostly used for the control of weight loss in diet pills. Although, it is very dangerous to the body and is linked to irregular liver function. France has banned the sale of this drug, while Canada restricts this from being included in any product that is taken 'by mouth.' It is still available in the US though, being added into products as a flavoring agent. Side effects for this drug may cause liver disease, or sudden death.
  9. Heartleaf - Heartleaf, or Country Mallow, is a dangerous ingredient in diet pills that one should avoid. As well, it has been known to contain Ephedra as an active ingredient. Dangerous side effects for this drug include heart problems, high blood pressure, and heart failure.
  10. Guarana - Guarana is a plant that has been used in medicine for quite some time. Like caffeine, it is a stimulant used in diet pills to suppress one's appetite and boost a person's metabolism. Side effects for this drug may include high blood pressure, elevated heartbeat, and heart failure.
