Resisting temptation to view porn can be really tough. Especially when it's just a few clicks away. You know it's wrong, but you just can't help yourself. Honestly, you think about and want sex all day long. You're clearly addicted, and wonder if the temptation to view Internet porn can ever be beaten once and for all.

What Studies Show

Studies show that porn-related keywords are the most commonly typed keywords on Internet search engines, and like millions of others, you've made the porn industry rich from your addiction. People who watch porn lack the ability to experience true sexual intimacy in marriage, and often have intense feelings of guilt and despair. Porn is often the root cause why people practice masturbation, engage in sexual deviancy and commit sexual assault. Watching pornography has made you selfish, greedy and lacking in self-control, which are all things that God finds extremely offensive. It is a sin that you can't keep secret or continue to ignore. You have to confess, repent, and overcome your porn addiction if you ever hope to lead a normal life again.

Overcoming Your Internet Porn Addiction

There are two factors involved in the battle to overcome an Internet porn addiction: spiritual and practical. From a spiritual viewpoint, addiction to pornography is a sin that your Heavenly Father is eager to help you overcome. The first step is to genuinely acknowledge that Jesus Christ is your Savior and that you can receive salvation and forgiveness by means of his sacrifice. Without looking to Jesus Christ as a means for salvation, there is no lasting victory over pornography, which is clearly stated (John 15:5):“Apart from me, you can do nothing.”

Once you acknowledge your addiction to Internet porn, the struggle to overcome it does not have to be done all by yourself. Belief in Christ is just the beginning. Resisting temptation requires work on your part, but you can be empowered with the Holy Spirit that is available to you (Ephesians 3:16) whenever you need more strength.

An addiction to Internet porn is not an “unforgivable, unconquerable sin.” The cleansing of God’s forgiveness is available to you (1 John 1:9). The invigorating power of God’s Word is also at your disposal (Romans 12:1-2). Commit your mind and eyes to Him. (1 John 2:16). And by all means make requests to God to:

  • Strengthen you and help you to overcome pornography (Philippians 4:13).
  • Protect yourself from further exposure to porn (1 Corinthians 10:13).
  • Fill your mind with things that are pleasing to Him (Philippians 4:8).
  • Seek God's help daily in prayer.

Fight Fire With Water

There are some good programs available to combat an addiction to Internet pornography such as www.X3Pure.com and www.PornAddiction.com. In addition, there are quality internet filtering programs like www.CovenantEyes.com which can completely block your computer from accessing pornography. Since viewing pornography is often done in private, a person can resist temptation more easily when he or she knows that their every move is being watched. A great accountability software you can download is X3watch at www.X3Watch.com. It monitors your Internet activity and sends a report of any objectionable websites you have browsed to an accountability partner of your choice, such as a family member or friend.

You can also read some really good books on how to overcome porn addiction like:

Lastly, fill your mind daily with God’s Word (Psalm 119:11) and take the practical steps listed above to keep yourself accountable and block Internet porn access. “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20).
