Jesus Is Already Lord

One of the questions that often face those aspiring to be Christians is “How do I make Jesus Lord of my life?” For a non-believer this question might be interpreted as the method that they can become a follower of Christ. However, they may not realize that Jesus is already the Lord and they just have to learn how to yield to His will and submit to His Lordship.

Submission

The dictionary definition states: "the action or fact of accepting or yielding to a superior force or to the will or authority of another person." Submission to the commands of God is what the followers of Jesus must do to become in fellowship with God as a Christian. Submission means that we must yield to the will and control of Jesus Christ if we are to be true believers. We must also be obedient to God. For example, in Exodus 20:14-15, two of the Ten Commandments from God require obedience when it comes to not committing adultery and not stealing. Another scripture, John 15:17, commands us to love one another. These are the things Christians must submit to in order to respond to the Lordship of Jesus. Ephesians 2:8-9 further explains that Christians are saved through grace and not the works that they may do. The key element of being a Christian is the faith in God, which is His gift to believers.

Spirit-filled Obedience

Of course, submitting to the commands of God and being obedient is not easy. It is not something that we as humans can do on our own. Even Christians will be susceptible to sinful behavior and impure thoughts. We have to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit as identified in John 14:16-17 to help us with this obedience. Jesus said that God will give us an advocate to help us be obedient. It is only then will we be able to combat the evil that drives us to break the commandments from God. The spirit that fills us as stated in Ephesians 5:18 helps us to be consumed with holiness and prevents us from getting drunk with the wine of worldly ways. The scripture's main idea of submission is not that the believer receives more of the Spirit but the believer surrenders so that the Spirit gets more of him. The power of this spirit helps us to cope with day-to-day temptations. It provides guidance on how to treat others kindly as stated in Romans 12:17. In Ephesians 4:25, it teaches us how to be truthful when we communicate with our fellow man. For assistance in our business dealings, there is scripture, Ephesians 4:28, that provides instruction on how the Holy Spirit can help us be honest. When we study God’s word and devote time for prayer as outlined in 2 Timothy 2:15, we learn about submitting to Christ’s Lordship and obeying God’s commands.

Confess Our Sins

As stated before, we are prone to falling short of God’s glory and not being obedient to Him. When that occurs, we are not submitting to Christ’s Lordship. God has provided us with a way to salvation for those times too by giving us an opportunity to confess our sins. In 1 John 1:9, the apostle John identifies the way we can confess our sins, be forgiven and be cleansed of our sins and made pure. Confession to God is made through prayer and it should be the first action we take when we have sinned. Through prayer we can ask Him to help us stay on the right path and make the right decisions.

When the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit is allowed to act instead of us trying to do it with our own strength, we can be obedient to the Lordship of Christ. Christ is happy when we are weak in our own strength and facing hardships and adversities as stated in 2 Corinthians 12:10 because then we are relying in Him. Once that happens, we are at our strongest because of the Holy Spirit. Thus, the answer to the question “How do I make Jesus Lord of my life?” can be answered by submitting to the Lordship of Jesus, being obedient to God and confessing our sins.
